Renovating The Bristol Wing

Lockdown proved to be a time of change and sacrifice for us all.

During lockdown, YMCA Brunel Group agreed to sublet our commercial hostel, The Bristol Wing, to St. Mungo’s Homeless Charity. The Wing was used as emergency housing for the street homeless throughout the Covid lockdown. We are proud to add this story to the already rich history of our beautiful building, and we are excited to have the building back in our hands for a new journey.

This summer, we were reunited with our Bristol property, but to our great sadness we found the building in a very poor state. We are now working hard to renovate The Bristol Wing and bring it back to a bustling, trendy hostel. When we first acquired the old Police HQ we did so with the sole aim of turning it in to a cool hostel for our cool city and a great community to be part of – even if it is only for one night! We lovingly decorated, restored and brought the building back to life including the restoration of the cage lift from the 1920’s. We used salvaged materials blended with a touch of luxurious velvet and leather to deliver an eclectic but comfortable look. Our goal was to honour the building’s rich heritage throughout while creating a cosy, community feel to welcome guests from all over the world to the unique city of Bristol.

Now that we have the Bristol Wing back, we want to continue to tell the story of the old Police HQ and all of the lives it has led since, including its covid story. We are excited to see where we end up and we can’t wait to open its doors to you all as a commercial hostel.
