Linda’s Journey

Linda is a 72-year-old woman who faced many personal challenges before arriving at Spencer House.

After a period of hospitalisation overseas, she returned to the UK in February 2023 and, with nowhere else to go, found herself living in her son’s garden shed. The space offered only the most basic amenities – little more than a porta-loo – and her mobility difficulties made day-to-day life increasingly hard. Stairs became a particular struggle, adding further strain to an already fragile situation.

By January 2025, her family could no longer support her, and Linda reached out for help. This led her to Spencer House in Wells.

Soon after, Linda moved into her new room at Spencer House; a ground-floor space that allowed her to settle quickly and safely. Bringing a few personal belongings helped her create a sense of home, and the transition proved reassuringly smooth. Spencer House’s warm, experienced support team played an essential part in this, ensuring that Linda’s basic needs were met and that she felt welcomed, comfortable, and genuinely cared for.

Linda made use of the home’s facilities, including the Wi-Fi and computer, which helped her stay connected and access important information. She was also grateful for the charitable food provisions available in the kitchen during this difficult period.

In February 2025, Linda received the news she had been hoping for: she had been accepted into permanent accommodation. This marked a life-changing moment, offering her stability, independence, and the chance to rebuild a home of her own. She was delighted to learn that move-on funding had also been secured for essential white goods and furniture — support that made an enormous difference and eased some of the stress and uncertainty that can come with moving.

Linda’s journey from crisis to stability illustrates the vital role that supportive housing services play in transforming lives. Spencer House provided not only a safe place to stay but also the emotional, physical, and social support she needed to move forward with dignity and confidence. It offered her the fresh start she deserved.
