I would love for youth club to really be put on the map, so more people know about it and it is accessed by anyone and everyone – so they can grow, learn and make friends.
Barriers to thriving
Young people lack safe spaces to learn and develop key skills that will help them to flourish.
Frome Youth and Community Centre (FYCC) is a major provider of safe space for young people in Frome, but it lacks funding and equipment that young people need to realise their full potential and gain the confidence to succeed.
Many young people don’t have access to computers, creative software, games and activities or even warm meals at home. This leaves many young people feelings left behind and isolated from their peers.
Statistics
In 2023, about 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8 to 25 years had a probable mental disorder.
More than 1 in 4 children aged 8 to 16 years (26.8%) with a probable mental disorder had a parent who could not afford for their child to take part in activities outside school or college, compared with 1 in 10 (10.3%) of those unlikely to have a mental disorder.
(NHS 2023 Survey)
1 in 20 Frome residents live in one of the 20% most deprived areas of England.
Compared with Somerset, Frome has a relatively higher proportion of children in income poverty.
(Frome Town Profile)
Funds raised will go towards equipping Frome Youth and Community Centre with new resources for young people to make FYCC a safe, inclusive and enriching space to hang out.

“My favourite part of youth club is it’s a good place to be and a better place to get out the house, and a great way to spend time with your friends” – Hannah, aged 12

My dream is that youth work is accessible to all young people and that we are able to provide a service that meets their needs.

I hope that our youth club can become a thriving hub for young people where they can improve their mental health and receive support.
